What tiles are suitable for lining a swimming pool?

The main options are glass mosaic, vitrified ceramic and porcelain. Glass mosaic is the classic choice. It handles full submersion, chlorine and pH fluctuations without any degradation, and catches the light beautifully. Fully vitrified ceramic and porcelain with water absorption below 0.5 percent are also excellent.

Do you provide the waterproofing membrane as well as the tiles?

Yes. A pool cannot be tiled onto bare concrete without a tanking system. We supply and apply a two-component waterproof membrane to the entire shell before tiling starts. This is the most critical stage of a pool tiling project and getting it right prevents every expensive problem that comes later.

How long does pool tiling take?

A residential pool of average size takes one to three weeks depending on tile type and complexity. Glass mosaic on sheets is faster than individual hand-set tessera. Curing time for the waterproofing membrane, adhesive and grout adds non-working days. We give a detailed programme at quoting.

What adhesive do you use for pool tiles?

We use a two-part epoxy or a C2TE classified cementitious adhesive specifically rated for full immersion. Standard adhesive will fail in a pool environment. The grout is also pool-rated, usually epoxy grout, which is chemically resistant and does not need periodic resealing.

Can you retile an existing pool?

Yes, though it requires more preparation. The old tiles must be removed, the shell assessed for cracks or substrate damage, repaired, and then the full waterproofing and tiling sequence followed. The result is essentially a new pool shell.

Yes. We handle the entire tiled area around the pool, coping stones, steps, surrounds and any associated drainage channels. Using one contractor for the whole perimeter ensures consistent levels and pattern alignment.

The waterline band is the strip of tiles at the water surface, where tiles are alternately submerged and exposed to air and UV. It is the most vulnerable zone in a pool. Using a highly durable tile, usually glass mosaic or a glazed ceramic, with a chemical-resistant adhesive is essential.

Within the range of pool-suitable tiles, colour and pattern choice is wide. Classic pale blue and turquoise mosaics produce that Mediterranean pool colour in the water. Dark pools look dramatic and contemporary. Natural stone-effect tiles give a more naturalistic garden pool feel.

Glass mosaic tiles will last the lifetime of the pool. The waterproofing system and the chemical-resistant grout are the limiting factors. Properly maintained, a tiled pool will last 20 to 30 years or more.
